John Burton was born in Allenton, and his parents resided at 122, Havelock Road, Derby.
He had been in the Army for three years, before which he worked for Mr. Stone, a wheelwright, of Normanton. According to the newspaper report, John Burton was shot in the head whilst rescuing a comrade during the battle of Lille on 20th October, 1914, however, official sources, as can be seen above, gave his date of death as 11th March 1915 during the battle of Neuve Chapelle.
